WHY BLACKS IN GOVERNMENT (BIG)?
That is the first question many people ask. The best answer is to look at it another way:

WHY NOT BIG?
BIG is a national response to the need for African Americans in public service to organize around issues of mutual concern and to use their collective strength to confront workplace and community problems. BIG's goals essentially are to promote EQUITY in all aspects of American life, EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC SERVICE, and OPPORTUNITY to ALL Americans.

WHY SHOULD I JOIN BIG?
That's the second most frequent question we get. But it's a question only YOU can answer. BIG is not for everyone. It's for people who believe in the possibility of change and are willing to work for it. That's not always easy or risk-free.

But remember, as a government employee, you are called upon to provide the highest quality of public service. As a concerned member of the community, you are challenged to exercise leadership and civic responsibility. You need to be able to influence the institutional forces that affect the workplace and your community. BIG is one way to do this.

If you agree with the goals and feel you can benefit from the organizational programs, you should make the BIG commitment.
